The 5-Step Mindful Method to 2X Your Email Opens

If you're not investing intentional energy into your subject lines, you're leaving significant opportunities - and revenue - on the table.

When I first started writing emails for MSW Nutrition, subject lines felt like a rushed afterthought—a quick sentence typed moments before hitting send.

While it worked (sort of), primarily due to our large subscriber list, open rates hovered below 30%.

I knew we could do better.

Today, thanks to a mindful and strategic approach, our open rates consistently surpass 65%, more than doubling our engagement and significantly benefiting our business.

Today, I'll share the mindful method I developed to craft subject lines that intrigue authentically and consistently convert.

You can immediately apply this method, deepening your connection and trust with your audience.

Key Takeaways

Here's what we'll discuss in this issue

  1. Subject lines deserve a clear strategy.

  2. Mindful clarity outperforms cleverness.

  3. Consistent testing transforms results.

  4. Avoiding spam traps protects your reach.

  5. Building trust ensures lasting engagement.

Subject lines deserve a clear strategy

Subject lines used to be a chore rushed at the last minute.

The moment I began treating them as an integral part of our overall marketing plan, results shifted dramatically.

At MSW Nutrition, this shift in mindset allowed us to intentionally spark interest, dramatically increasing our email open rates.

Remember, your subject line is your audience's first interaction with your content; make it count.

Mindful clarity outperforms cleverness

My approach to writing subject lines is simple: clear beats clever every time.

I call it Mindful Clarity—a straightforward way of writing that respects your reader’s time while still sparking curiosity. You’re giving your audience exactly enough to know what they’re getting, but making it intriguing enough that they can’t resist opening.

Alex Cattoni is someone I take advise from often and she has a video on this as well that I think could help you build your own strategy. Check it out (later 😀 ) for more insights on writing clear, engaging subject lines.

Consistent testing transforms results

Mindful clarity is intuitive but also requires regular testing.

At MSW, we methodically tested different variations, carefully tracking the results and refining our subject lines based on real data.

Our open rates grew from below 30% to consistently over 65% through this intentional, iterative process.

Imagine what it would do for your business/platform if twice as many people saw your message

Track your results, listen to your audience, and they’ll guide you forward.

Avoiding spam traps protects your reach

Certain words can trigger spam filters and sabotage your best efforts.

Words like "free," "guarantee," and "discount" often trigger these filters.

Instead, choose language that emphasizes value and genuine benefit without risking inbox placement.

Mindful wording ensures your messages actually reach your audience.

Here's the 5-Step Mindful Clarity Method for Subject Lines

  1. Identify a Clear Pain Point or Desire: Understand precisely what your audience wants or needs right now.

  2. Hint at the Solution Clearly: Tease the solution straightforwardly without giving away all the details.

  3. Use Specific Numbers: Specificity—such as "3 ways" or "15 minutes"—consistently increases curiosity and opens.

  4. Keep it Concise (Under 50 Characters): Short subject lines ensure visibility on all devices and increase engagement.

  5. Build Trust Through Consistency: A sales mentor of mine though me the phrase, "Like me, know me, trust me, pay me." Sales happen in this order, never out of order.

By consistently delivering what your subject lines promise, you establish trust. Over time, trust creates loyal readers and ultimately loyal customers.

Bonus Tip: Take something proven and add your unique twist.

Creativity paired with mindful clarity can set your emails apart.

If there's one mindful practice to embrace this quarter, let it be crafting clear, intriguing subject lines.

Try not to think about it as a way to simply boost open rates. Aim to genuinely connect, build trust, and position yourself as a thoughtful leader.
